The earliest inhabitants of what is now Namibia were the bushman,or San peoples who were and are nomadic hunter/gatherers. About 2,000 years ago the Nama (hottentot), also members of the San people, settled in the south along the Orange River. In the ninth century the Damara, another related group, settled into Central Namibia. All three sub-tribes were members of the Choisan Language group.

During the 17th century, the Herero, a Bantu people, immigrated from the east African lakes region, and entered Namibia from the northwest an area now known as the Caprivi strip. Eventually these Bantu peoples moved south, principle among them the Himba tribe. They remain today after having displaced many of the bushman. These displaced San or bushman were pushed to more isolated, less productive, fringe desert regions.

In the 19th century, white farmers, mostly Boers, moved north from South Africa. With their guns and horses, they quickly dominated the region despite stiff resistance from the Herero and Nama.In the mid-l880s, Germany claimed the area as a territory and today its strong Germanic roots and heritage continue. It was a south African protectorate (south-west Africa) from l915 until l966 when it achieved independence. English is the official language, but Afrikaanz is most generally spoken.

Namibia is largely a dry arid country stretching from the Atlantic on the west to Botswana on the east. The southern boundary is the Orange River and South Africa. Much of it is an extensive central plateau averaging some 3,500 ft and it includes the Etosha pan, a large salt marsh at somewhat higher elevation in the east. Daytime temperatures during hunting season (May thru September) will generally range 68-78 degrees although temperatures outside that are not unc ommon. Nights can be brisk. Rainfall is very low; averaging 4-12 inches per year for most of the country.

Namibia affords the hunter very good pricing value and excellent greater kudu & gemsbok. The over-all number of species are fewer than in other locales. Leopard are generally smaller because of the difficult terrain but are found in good number. We hunt twenty different locales and offer a unique horseback hunting safari for those interested in something truly different.
